MANILA, Philippines — Petro Gazz has tapped Lindsey Vander Weide as import for its title-retention bid in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference, which opens on October 8.

The Angels on Thursday welcomed Vander Weide on their social media pages.

The 6-foot-3 outside hitter is an Oregon University standout. She played in the overseas league as an import for Volleyball Nantes in France from 2019 to 2020, Bekescsabai Roplabda SE in Hungary from 2020-21, and recently saw action in AEK Athens in Greece.

She was a two-time best outside hitter in the Pac-12 Conference and won the same award during her pro stint in Hungary.

The 24-year-old American is beefing up the deep wing spiker rotation of Petro Gazz as she teams up with Myla Pablo, Grethcel Soltones, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Jonah Sabete, and Nicole Tiamzon.

The Angels were the last team to win the Reinforced Conference crown back in 2019 before the pandemic put the import-flavored tournament on hold. Imports Wilma Salas and Janisa Johnson delivered the franchise’s first PVL crown after beating the Creamline Cool Smashers in Finals Game 3.

Veteran Chie Saet, Sabete, Djanel Cheng, and Cienne Cruz were the holdovers of that championship core. They are defending their crown with a new set of teammates, also bannered by middle blockers Remy Palma and MJ Phillips.
