MANILA, Philippines—Arellano’s new bruiser Cade Flores was given this season of the NCAA’s first Player of the Week award.

Flores, along with the backcourt tandem of Axel Doromal and Shane Menina steered the Chiefs to a 3-1 win-loss opening record to earn the nod from the Collegiate Press Corps.

The former FEU recruit posted 11.75 points and 11.75 rebounds in four games to overtake College of St. Benilde’s Migs Oczon, San Sebastian’s Rommel Calahat, and Lyceum’s Enoch Valdez for the POTW plum.

“I’m liking the challenge. It helps build confidence with each other. We take each game as a challenge to us,” said the 24-year-old after the Chiefs’ win over Letran on Sunday, 72-69.

Flores helped the Chiefs obtain a win against the defending champions with a near double-double of 18 markers and nine boards.

The weekly award is supported by minor sponsors MNL Kingpin and Tinapayan Festival and is handed out by scribes from print and online covering the beat.
