MANILA, Philippines—Guarding one of the league’s top rebounders was key for San Sebastian in snapping its four-game losing streak.
Golden Stags coach Egay Macaraya explained the impact of locking down Emilio Aguinaldo College big man Allen Liwag, who has had a desirable string of games despite staying winless.
“They (big men) were helping each other out. We can’t fully stop Liwag because he’s good but they worked together. The good thing about it is, they worked hard to stop him and he is the key for EAC,” said Macaraya after their 78-61 drubbing of the Generals at San Juan Arena on Friday.
“It was all about team effort,” he added.
Liwag only scored two points, all from the free throw line, as he sank no baskets in seven attempts. He also snagged down seven rebounds.
Friday’s outing was a far cry from the center’s season numbers of 12.43 points and 11.14 rebounds per game.
Liwag, one of the chosen players for the NCAA’s all-star game this weekend, acknowledged his shortcoming in the Generals’ ninth straight loss.
“I kept on looking for myself to get back in the game that I didn’t execute my role with the team properly,” he said.
The Golden Stags, who improved to 3-5, were powered by Alex Desoyo with 11 points while Jessie Sumoda tallied 10 points and six rebounds.
