Fortysomethings book PCA quarters slots

A couple of 40-somethings are chomping their way through the 39th Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open Tennis Championships in Paco, Manila.

Johnny Arcilla, 42, crushed 23-year-old former age-grouper Norman Enriquez, 6-0, 6-2, at PCA’s indoor shell court on Wednesday to solidify his status as the tournament’s top seed.

“So far, so good,” Arcilla said as he marched to the quarterfinals of a tournament he is hoping to win for the third straight staging.

Joining him in the last eight is 40-year-old fourth seed Elber Anasta, who bucked cramps and held off a game Alax Acabo, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2).

“I was close to giving up but I’m happy I kept fighting,” said Anasta.

Arcilla will battle the winner between John Renest Sonsona and Joseph Victorino.

Anasta, on the other hand, will tackle either Ronard Joven or Muthu Senthilkumar of India.

In the another men’s singles result, Jose Antonio Tria ousted Jude Michael Padao, 6-3, 6-1.
