MANILA, Philippines—San Sebastian’s “secret weapon” was right on target on Friday.
Rhinwil Yambing came off the bench to deliver 17 points and four rebounds in the Stags’ 72-68 victory over Mapua at Filoil EcoOil Arena in San Juan City.
“This is what he’s always giving our team, the instant offense. This time, he really stepped up,” San Sebastián coach Egay Macaraya said.
Yambing scored nine of his 17 in the pivotal fourth quarter including two big baskets from beyond the arc.
“I just want to play here and show my talents. Coach never lets me down because he gives me the opportunity,” the 23-year-old rookie said.
Macaraya lauded Yambing and said his potential will be something to look out for.
“In the long run, people will really see more out of Rhinwil. He’s only a rookie now and he’s still feeling the NCAA but credit to him because he’s always been our secret weapon.”
While Yambing looks to achieve more goals in the NCAA, there will be one thing on his list he can no longer cross off.
The Iligan-native wanted to play against former NCAA Rookie-MVP Rhenz Abando, who he idolizes.
“I prayed before that I could reach his playing years here so we can battle but the Lord brought him to another country which is good for him and his future,” he explained.
Yambing is currently averaging 7.13 points and 3.25 rebounds per outing for San Sebastian.
