MANILA, Philippines — The UAAP has decided to postpone the men’s basketball matches and the women’s badminton opener on Saturday amid the heavy rains and strong winds caused by Tropical Storm Paeng.

However, the two women’s basketball games, scheduled early Saturday, pushed through at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The men’s badminton also kicked off at Centro Atletico Badminton Center in Quezon City despite the typhoon before the league decided to cancel the afternoon session of the women’s games.

“Upon clearing with the UAAP President, we are constrained to cancel the afternoon games for both the men’s basketball and women’s badminton tournaments due to the hoisting of Signal No. 3 over Metro Manila due to Typhoon Paeng,” the UAAP wrote in a statement.

“This means automatic suspension of all collegiate activities under the Commission on Higher Education, including varsity events like the UAAP. Please wait for future announcements of the new game schedules. Please be guided accordingly and stay safe.”

Metro Manila is currently placed under Signal No.3.

La Salle, which holds a 3-4 record, was supposed to take on University of Santo Tomas (1-6) at 2 p.m., while second placer Ateneo (5-2) was scheduled to battle Adamson (3-4) at 4 p.m. in the men’s basketball.

The La Salle Lady Archers stunned the UST Tigresses, 67-60, while the Blue Eagles and Lady Falcons were clashing for the last match of the game day as of posting time.
