NCAA: Rhinwil Yambing hits 11 triples, shoots San Sebastian past JRU
MANILA, Philippines—Rhinwil Yambing scored a season-high 36 points as San Sebastian clobbered a depleted Jose Rizal University side, 92-74, in the NCAA Season 98 men’s basketball tournament at San Juan Arena on Friday.
Yambing caught fire with 11 triples on 15 attempts while also grabbing 10 rebounds as the Stags climbed to 6-7.
Article continues after this advertisement“We knew JRU’s game plan. They were lacking players so I knew they were going to play zone. So in practice, we worked on our shooting because I know that’s what they’re going to give,” coach Egay Macaraya said.
With only six players available following the John Amores incident last Tuesday, the Heavy Bombers didn’t have much to show after the opening period.
Facing little resistance from JRU, San Sebastian shot 53 percent from field, including 22-of-43 from distance.
Article continues after this advertisementThe Stags only led by three after the first quarter but eventually pulled away in the second period with the Bombers showing fatigue. The lead ballooned to as many as 25.
Alex Desoyo added 12 points, five rebounds and eight assists while Romel Calahat collected 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks for San Sebastian.
Agen Miranda led JRU (6-8) with 27 points while Jed Mercado scored 17. JL Delos Santos nearly had a triple-double with 17 markers, 10 boards and seven assists.
