MANILA, Philippines —Scottie Thompson was voted as Fiba Asia Cup’s 2022 Player of the Year.

The Gilas Pilipinas guard won the fan voting on Fiba Asia Cup’s Facebook page, besting Japanese forward Yuta Watanabe.

Thompson, the reigning PBA MVP, was the people’s choice over Watanabe of the Brooklyn Nets in the final phase of voting.

The Barangay Ginebra start joined Kai Sotto and Gilas women prodigy, both voted the Young Player of the Year awards in men’s and women’s, respectively.

Thompson was selected over Sanchir Tungalag of Mongolia and Behnam Yakhchali of Iran in the first two rounds of voting.

Wael Arakji of Lebanon, Zhou Qi of China, Dar Tucker of Jordan, and Freddie Lish of Thailand were also part of the nominees.

Thompson got his first Gilas call-up this year in the fourth window with Jordan Clarkson and Kai Sotto last August.

But do-it-all guard unleashed his national team breakthrough in the fifth window last November when they swept two road games against Jordan and Saudi Arabia, where he posted 8.5 points, 11 rebounds, and 5.5 assists.
