MIKEE Romero, who turned Harbour Centre into one of the most successful teams in the amateur ranks, is taking a second crack at the Philippine Basketball Association.
Romero yesterday confirmed plans to return to the PBA either through a new franchise or by buying an existing one.
“We’ll write a formal letter to PBA commissioner Chito Salud about our intention and inquire if there’s a new franchise for sale,” said Romero.
Harbour Centre won seven titles in the defunct Philippine Basketball League and co-owns the AirAsia Philippine Patriots in the Asean Basketball League. The Patriots, then carrying the Harbour Centre colors, were the inaugural champions of the ABL in 2010.
Romero declined to give details but sources said that Harbour Centre could opt to buy the franchise of Powerade.
The businessman-sportsman, who also heads the Philippine National Shooting Association, had a brief stint in the pro league in 2009.
Romero ran the show for the Burger King Titans along with the owners of Air21 but decided to pull out the team after a few games.
He was also the main sponsor of the national basketball team which captured the gold medal in the 2007 Southeast Asian Games in Thailand.
