MANILA, Philippines–San Miguel Beer’s big Sunday duel with TNT could be considered a confidence-booster in its bid to wrest the PBA Governors’ Cup crown.
But coach Jorge Gallent doesn’t want to be too far ahead going into the contest at Philsports Arena in Pasig City pitting teams currently sharing top spot in the season-ending conference.
“One game at a time, my friend,” Gallent said after the Beermen’s 102-99 win over Barangay Ginebra on Friday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Beermen share a 7-1 slate with the Tropang Giga, with teams with either winning records or traditional contenders among their victims.
Aside from Ginebra, San Miguel has also beaten Meralco and Magnolia while its lone defeat came against Converge.
Another stern test would be TNT, which also won seven of the first eight matches. Among TNT’s victories in the eliminations came at the expense of Magnolia and Meralco.
The game is the last for both teams before they head to Japan for their campaign in the East Asia Super League Champions Week in the first week of March.
But before facing some of Asia’s top clubs, the Beermen hope to come away with a victory.
“The title thing is there, but we have to achieve a lot more things getting there,” Gallent said.
