MANILA, Philippines — Rookie Geezel Tsunashima proved she is ready to deliver for Ateneo, helping the team claim its first win in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament.
After scoring only a point in just one set played in their straight-set loss to National University on opening day, Tsunashima showed her worth, delivering 13 points in their 25-17, 25-23, 24-26, 25-10 victory over University of the East on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.
“My mindset every time I enter the court, I always think of showing everyone the results of my hard work. Of course, when coach fields me [on the court], there is a purpose. So I showed my purpose and play the role given to me,” she said in Filipino.
The Filipino-Japanese spiker made her presence felt right away when she checked in the second set for Lyann De Guzman, providing the much-needed spark for the Blue Eagles.
Ateneo coach Oliver Almadro lauded how Tsunashima stepped up for their team.
“I’m happy that Zel delivered. At first, she has a different role for us. So she adjusted. What I’m telling her is to give her best whatever her role is,” Almadro said in Filipino.
Tsunashima was glad to help Ateneo improve to 1-1 before facing its rival La Salle on Saturday at the same venue.
But her impressive game will not stop her from striving harder.
“I’m sure that we’re all aware that we still have to show a lot and I’m sure also my teammates are not contented with this win. We’ll show a better performance next time,” Tsunashima. “I have the same learning as ate Faith (Nisperos). Having the right mindset is important when it comes to the game. Whoever our opponent is, we just have to play it right.”
