NCAA: Arellano, Mapua post wins in men’s and women’s volleyball

MANILA, Philippines—Arellano and Mapua triumphed in both the NCAA Season 98 men’s and women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at San Andres Complex.

The Lady Chiefs swept Lyceum, 26-24, 25-16, 25-16, thanks to Marianne Padillon’s heroics.

Padillon powered Arellano, which improved to 3-1, to the victory with a 12-point outburst. Laika Tudlasan and Trina Abay helped the cause with 11 points each.

Joan Doguna had 13 in a losing effort for the Lady Pirates, who tripped to a 3-1 card.

Their male counterpart Chiefs also dominated the Pirates in three sets, 25-21, 25-10, 25-20.

Captain Jethro Cabillan finished with a game-high 12 markers for Arellano while Kim Vincent Tan contributed 11 to fuel the team to a 3-1 card.

Charles Del Rio was the highest scorer for Lyceum, which remains winless after four games.

Mapua’s women’s team, meanwhile, trounced Jose Rizal University, 25-23, 27-25, 21-25, 25-23, in a two-hour clash.

Therese Manalo showed out for the Lady Cardinals with 21 big points as they improved to 3-1.

Riza Rose’s 23-marker outburst was not enough for the Lady Bombers as they tripped to a 0-4 winless slate.

The Cardinals had the same fate after beating the Heavy Bombers in a tight five-setter, 16-25, 25-23, 24-26, 36-34, 16-14, behind Barbie San Andres’s stellar showing.

San Andres fueled the Cardinals to a 3-1 card with 32 big points.

Ken Daynata scored 24 in a losing effort for JRU, which fell further down the ladder with only one win and three losses.
