CEBU—Jun Jun Plana is a man playing among the veritable boys of the Philippine Airlines Interclub’s regular championship division.
And on Wednesday, the 55-year-old showed his team’s young guns how things are done.
Article continues after this advertisementDraining a long putt for birdie to close out a two-under-par 70 worth 38 points, Plana drove the Southwoods scoring machine to an opening day 141 and a 14-point lead over darkhorse Eastridge as the Carmona-based bets opened their title-retention bid on a smashing note at Cebu Country Club (CC) here.
“He’s playing again [in the second round] at Club Filipino,” nonplaying skipper Thirdy Escaño said. “I can’t ask for anything more. We were targeting a 140 [opening score] and we got more than that with our old guy leading the way.”
Cody Rolida backed up Plana with a 37 and Gab Manotoc and Josh Jorge accounted for 33s.
Article continues after this advertisementAlex Bisera also had a 38 for Eastridge, which drew 30s from Loyd Labrador and Joachim Yu and 29 from Tonton Asistio even as Cebu CC was another point behind at 126.
Eric Deen scored 34 to pace Cebu, which got 31s from Mark Dy and Vincent Osmeña and either 30s of Kyu Ok On and Josh Alvarez.
