MANILA, Philippines—Communication played a big factor for Meralco in its crucial win over Phoenix in the PBA Governors’ Cup tournament at Philsports Arena on Sunday as far as import KJ McDaniels is concerned.

“Communication was key for us. That’s what we talked about at halftime and we did a great job of getting to the shooters,” said McDaniels.

“We just have to keep continuing to do better, stay in the game and learn from what happened.”

McDaniels finished with a double-double of 19 points and 16 rebounds while also delivering a stellar performance on the defensive end.

The former NBA player accounted for four of the team’s nine steals and five of the Bolts’ eight blocks.

The “communication” aspect that McDaniels pointed out showed in the team’s ball movement.

Meralco tallied 25 assists led by Chris Newsome’s nine while Phoenix, as a team, only registered 12.

McDaniels, like usual, packed the paint as he took only two attempts from beyond-the-arc.

“That’s my job to control the paint and make my presence felt down there,” the 30-year-old forward said.

McDaniels is certainly making his presence felt for Meralco averaging 26.7 points and 16.6 boards per night.

With the win, Meralco stayed alive for a twice-to-beat advantage with a 7-4 record.
