MANILA, Philippines — Mark Calado unloaded 27 points as Far Eastern University took down La Salle, 25-21, 25-16, 21-25, 25-21, for its third straight win in the UAAP Season 85 men’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at Philsports Arena.
Calado delivered another 27-point performance as he poured in 23 kills, three blocks, and an ace to go with six digs to lead the Tamaraws to their third straight win for the solo second place with a 4-1 record.
But FEU coach Rei Diaz wants more from Calado.
“[We want more] from him especially Mark Calado is the MVP of UAAP high school,” said Diaz in Filipino. “But I’m glad to hear from him that he’s sticking to our system. Very good job.”
Calado, who also won an MVP in the PNVF Champions League in 2021, said he needs to improve his leadership.
“We must improve our communication inside the court because sometimes we get rattled. We have to compose ourselves,” said Calado in Filipino. “I should also avoid frowning inside the court. I can’t show negativity to my teammates.”
Martin Bugaoan was also instrumental with 12 points, all coming from attacks. Setter Benny Martinez dished out 22 excellent sets, as Herald Domingo and Carl Cabatac added nine and seven points, respectively.
FEU lost steam in the third set and was pushed to its limit by La Salle in the fourth tied at 4-1. But Jomel Codilla provided the spark off the bench and scored all of his three points for a 22-20 lead before Noel Kampton stopped the bleeding with a kill.
Bugaoan and JJ Javelona lifted the Tamaraws at match point, 24-21 before Calado nailed the game-winning block on JM Ronquillo.
La Salle saw its three-game win streak get snapped by FEU, sliding to a 3-2 record.
Ronquillo and Kampton led the Green Spikers with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Vince Maglinao chipped in 12 points and 19 receptions, while Billie Anima added 10 points including three digs.
