PBA: Breaking down the potential scenarios ahead of Governors’ Cup playoffs
MANILA, Philippines–Even with the quarterfinal cast and the four teams armed with the twice-to-beat advantage set in stone, there’s still one thing that needs to be settled before the elimination round of the PBA Governors’ Cup draws to a close.
TNT, San Miguel Beer and Barangay Ginebra will head into Friday’s doubleheader at Philsports Arena in Pasig City with a chance to gain the top seed going into the business end of the season-ending conference.

TNT has a 9-1 record while San Miguel and Ginebra have identical 8-2 slates.
IF SAN MIGUEL AND TNT WIN?
TNT will end the eliminations at 10-1 to secure the top seed and a matchup against No. 8 Phoenix in the quarterfinals. San Miguel is going to settle for the No. 2 spot and will face No. 7 Converge while Ginebra drops to No. 3 and a date with No. 6 NLEX.

This complicated scenario will create a three-way tie at 9-2, the seedings to be known based on Ginebra’s winning margin against TNT.
Ginebra can secure the top spot, provided it defeats TNT by at least four points, leaving San Miguel in second place and TNT in third. Otherwise, San Miguel takes the top spot.
A three-point win will allow Ginebra to place second with TNT placing third. Anything less will result in TNT at No. 2 and Ginebra at No. 3.
HOW TO DETERMINE THREE-WAY TIES?
A quotient system is being used to determine ties among at least three teams. In the case of TNT, San Miguel and Ginebra, total points scored will be divided to the total points allowed during matchups involving the three teams.
For example: San Miguel has a quotient of 1.0049 after scoring a total of 205 points against Ginebra and TNT while allowing 204.
Point differentials are sometimes used as an initial basis to determine ties. But using this alone will be complicated if two teams have the same margins, thus the need to do more math.
IF SAN MIGUEL LOSES AND TNT WINS?
TNT gets the top seed at 10-1 while San Miguel and Ginebra are going to end up tied at 8-3. San Miguel will claim the No. 2 seed while Ginebra will go third due to the league’s win-over-the-other rule.
The Beermen defeated the Gin Kings, 102-99, last Feb. 17 at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
IF SAN MIGUEL LOSES AND GINEBRA WINS?
Ginebra ties TNT at 9-2 and will take the top spot due to the win-over-the-other rule. TNT drops to second while San Miguel goes third with an 8-3 record.
