UAAP: Angel Canino lauds fellow rookie Trisha Tubu
MANILA, Philippines — Angel Canino expressed high respect for fellow rookie Trisha Tubu after La Salle and Adamson’s marquee match in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday at Filoil EcoOil Centre.
Canino, who was under the weather last week, shook off her slow start before unleashing 21 points to propel La Salle’s 22-25, 25-14, 25-16, 25-19 victory over Adamson and stay unbeaten in six games, nearing a first-round sweep.
Article continues after this advertisementThe prized recruit from La Salle Zobel got the better of Adamson’s leading scorer Tubu, but she’s not putting too much into their head-to-head as a rivalry as she remained focused on helping her team.
“I don’t see us as having a rivalry as super rookies. Respect to her because she is her own player and I am my own player,” said Canino in Filipino after nailing 20 kills on top of 17 excellent receptions.
Canino, La Salle’s leading scorer, has high respect for Tubu, who had 13 points.
Article continues after this advertisement“I have high respect for her because she contributes a lot to her team. And she’s the kind of player who doesn’t surrender. She’s a player who is reliable for her team inside the court,” she said in Filipino.
The former UAAP girls MVP said the Lady Spikers respect whoever they face inside the court.
“As our coaches said, we prepare for every team and we respect all of them. We always prepare for our game and our objective is to win,” said Canino.
Canino and the Lady Spikers try to complete a first-round sweep against the defending champion National University Lady Bulldogs on Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.
