MANILA, Philippines—The University of the Philippines continued to make moves in the UAAP offseason after securing the services of Fil-American Sean Alter.
Alter, a 6-foot-8 bruiser, formalized his intent to join the Fighting Maroons during his 2023 Smart-NBTC National Finals stint with FilNation-Select.
Alter is averaging 5.7 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game in the competition.
UP basketball program director Bo Perasol on Sunday said that the development “is the product of fruitful discussions between Sean, his family, our coaching staff, the UPMBT management team, and alumni involved in the program.”
“Sean’s another important piece to the puzzle for us to keep competing in the UAAP,” said Perasol.
“There is a shared belief in what we are working to accomplish in UP, and we are humbled that Sean is going to be part of a team that is committed to upholding the values of our University.”
UP failed to retain the UAAP crown last season after losing to Ateneo in the finals.
The acquisition of Alter beefed up an already stacked UP frontline led by UAAP MVP Malick Diouf.
“The team will benefit with the addition of a player with the work ethic and the desire to win displayed by Sean,” said UP coach Gold Monteverde.
“We understand that the team’s success is tied to the proper development of our players that’s why part of our coaching staff’s commitment is to focus on the growth and training of our rookies.”
Alter, who is eligible to suit up in Season 86, is the latest big man to join the Fighting Maroons.
Just recently, La Salle Greenhills standouts Luis Pablo, Seven Gagate and Josh Coronel also committed to play for UP.
