MANILA, Philippines—Adamson withstood a late charge by the University of the Philippines on its way to a 25-18, 25-17, 25-23 victory on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Kate Santiago delivered 16 points built on 12 attacks on top of three blocks and a service ace as the Lady Falcons tied the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses with a 5-2 record at the conclusion of their first-round campaign.
“We will review the games of our opponents in the second round and see the type of adjustments that we should make,” said Adamson coach Jerry Yee.
Down two sets and wobbling on the edge, the Lady Maroons sprang back by keeping Adamson on their toes in the final frame with Alyssa Bertolano and Nina Ytang helping them to forge ahead.
Trisha Tubu and Lucille Almonte came to the rescue, reversing the trend that saw the Lady Falcons regain advantage with an Almonte smash off the block.
Santiago’s crosscourt kill ended it all, sending UP to its fourth straight defeat, their sixth overall after the first round. Bertolano led the Lady Maroons with 12 points, including 11 attacks.
The Lady Falcons were in complete control in the first set before permitting UP to stage a fightback with an 11-3 exchange.
Good thing Lorence Toring and Ayesha Juegos saved Adamson with timely hits that stopped the bleeding.
Toring again got a piece of the action in the next frame with a crushing down-the-line blow and a pivotal block for the Lady Falcons, who closed out the set with a Santiago attack.
