MANILA, Philippines—The Gilas Pilipinas 3×3 Women’s team skidded out of the Fiba Asia Cup after losing to New Zealand, 17-10, in the quarterfinals on Sunday in Singapore.
What looked like a solid start for Gilas, 7-5, was only a pre-cursor to a game-changing run by New Zealand.
The Tall Ferns unloaded a huge 6-0 run for a commanding 11-7 advantage that seemingly took the fight out of Gilas.
Janine Pontejos carried much of the offensive load for the Philippines with six points while Afril Bernardo chipped in three.
Gilas had trouble containing Sharne Pupuke-Robati, who posted seven points and 13 rebounds for the Kiwis.
The Philippines split its two games in Pool A to make the quarters.
Gilas topped Iran, 16-13, but fell short against China, 19-10.
Despite the exit, Gilas women’s still went out with its best finish in the tournament.
