UAAP: Aprylle Tagsip stays ready to spark Adamson victory

MANILA, Philippines—Aprylle Tagsip proved she is always ready to deliver for Adamson when her number gets called.
Tagsip provided the spark off the bench, scoring seven points including two blocks in the last three sets to help Adamson stave off also-ran University of the East, 25-16, 25-19, 20-25, 27-25, in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at Philsports Arena.
“Malaki po yung tiwala namin sa first six pero nagkakamali din po sila parang ang mindset lang po always is maging ready and pag nabigyan ng chance, always grab it kasi minsan nga lang po,” said Tagsip shortly after their bounce back victory.
“Talagang binibigay po yung all namin. Kahit konti lang po yung mga chances na ibibigay po samin.”
(We really trust our first six but sometimes they commit mistakes, too. So our mindset is to be always ready. Whenever there is a chance, always grab it and give our all because [as bench players] we only have a few chances.)
Tagsip subbed in for Rizza Cruz, starting in the second and third. She checked in the fourth for Lorene Toring and nailed a crucial block on Van Bangayan to reach match point, 24-23.
Lady Falcons coach Jerry Yee was pleased with Tagsip’s performance, beefing up their middle blocker rotation.
“When Aprylle, she can block and she can spike. I’m happy with our middles. We’re, four-man deep kami in the middle,” Yee said in Filipino. “We’re looking for contribution from our wing spikers, especially in receiving. We’re gonna have to work on that.”
Tagsip said they still have to work on their lapses as they approach the final stretch of the elimination with an 8-3 record at joint second place.
“We played at the pace of our opponents. I know that it was uncharacteristic. We’re happy we still won but we still have a lot of minor lapses to work out. We can’t afford to commit the same mistakes and we have to work harder for our next game,” said Tagsip in Filipino.
Adamson battles league leader La Salle (9-1) on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena. Tagsip believes they have to show a positive attitude against the Lady Spikers.
“I don’t think there’s not much difference skills-wise. So we have to be positive always. Even if we commit mistakes, we have to make up for it and play composed,” she said.
