Tony Lascuña left everyone in awe Friday in Laguna.
“He still has it,” Clyde Mondilla, who was with the 51-year-old ace from Davao in the championship flight. said.
“I never seen him putt that well in a long time,” said Marvin Dumandan, who was in the same group as Lascuña in the third round.
Lascuña also left everyone swallowing dust, after firing a 69 in the final round that gave him a three-shot victory in the Caliraya Springs Championship.
“There’s a lot of young, talented players, but I am able [to]stay in shape through training [and] practice while improving my mental well-being,” added Lascuña, who completed a four-round 18-under 270 card as he beat Asian Tour campaigners Angelo Que and Lloyd Go for the title.
Lascuña fired earlier rounds of 68, 66 and 67 to stay solidly in front from start to finish, but it wasn’t until late in the tournament—in the last hole, in fact—that he felt he had the trophy in his reach.
“I just stayed focused but it was only after I hit my approach shot on the 18th that I knew I would win,” added Lascuña, who will ride this dominant showing into the next leg of the Philippine Golf Tour in Luisita next month.
“I’m so thankful that I was able to win it. I kept an eye on Angel (Que) and Clyde (Mondilla) and just did what I did in the first three rounds—fairways and greens and make the most of my (putting) chances,” said Lascuña.
Que pressed his bid to pull within two in a flight ahead of the championship group of Lascuña, Mondilla and Reymon Jaraula. But that didn’t fluster Lascuña, who hit clutch birdies on Nos. 12 and 14 to build another four-shot cushion.
