PHNOM PENH—The Philippine women’s sabre squad wound up with a silver medal following a 36-45 defeat at the hands of Vietnam in fencing on Sunday at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games.

Individual bronze medalist Jylyn Nicanor led the team composed of Allaine Nicole Cortey, Andrea Sayson and Queen Denise Dalmacio to a 45-40 semifinal victory over Cambodia’s Chhay Linly, Pen Narita, Sorn Nich and Yi Liza.

But Vietnam’s quartet of Minh Hang Le, Thi Khanh Phung, Thi Thu Bui and Thi Thu Pham proved steadier in dismantling the Philippine side in the finals at the Chroy Changvar Convention Hall here.

It was the third silver for Team Philippines in the sport after an injured Samantha Catantan placed second in women’s foil as well as Noelito Jose in the men’s epee.

The Filipino men’s epee team made up of Jose Jian Miguel Bautista, Lee Eigran Ergina and Rex Dela Cruz managed to seize a bronze medal.
