San Sebastian leaned on reigning Most Valuable Player Calvin Abueva to repulse Perpetual Help, 80-65, last night for its second straight victory in the 88th NCAA basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Abueva, who has declared his intention to enter the pro draft this year, further boosted his stock by tallying a triple double of 15 points, 15 rebounds and a career-best 11 assists for the Stags, who boosted their record to 2-1 and tied their victims in fourth spot.
It was Abueva’s second triple double of his collegiate career. He tallied 18 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists in a win over Arellano last season.
San Beda routed Lyceum, 82-67, in the second seniors game to gain a share of the lead with idle Jose Rizal University at 2-0. Lyceum fell to 0-3.
Earlier, San Beda registered the biggest winning margin in league history after demolishing Lyceum, 171-49, in the juniors division. The Red Cubs had 14 players scoring at least six points, led by Ranbill Tongco’s 27 points, on their way to the record-shattering performance.
The Stags pulled away in the third quarter after outscoring the Altas, 23-8, before Jovit dela Cruz and Michael Juico put the finishing touches to the win by combining for 11 points in the final period.
