MANILA, Philippines—Mark Magsayo may be back in the ring as early as September or October as he moves up to the super featherweight division.
After plying his trade in the featherweight division, Magsayo will test his mettle in another weight class, according to MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons in a report on ProBox TV News.
“The weight [featherweight division] took a little bit out of him so he is going to return in September or October at 130 [lbs],” said Gibbons in the report.
“He (Magsayo) beat Gary Russell, arguably the number one featherweight in the world, then he had to fight the worst guy ever in the world, Rey Vargas, and he gave a heck of a fight to Brandon Figueroa.”
Magsayo is on a two-fight tailspin in the featherweight division as he fell victim to Figueroa via unanimous decision in March after losing the title to Rey Vargas last year.
His struggles were highly visible leading up to fight night as he barely made the weight for the match at 126 lbs.
The former WBC featherweight champion expressed his excitement on Twitter, showing his eagerness to return to the boxing ring in a division where he might be more comfortable.

“See you soon, 130,” wrote Magsayo.
Gibbons, meanwhile, assured Magsayo’s supporters that the Filipino boxer will be looking out for bigger matches in the super featherweight division.
“[Magsayo] will be looking for the biggest and best fights at 130 lbs,” he said in the same report.
