Filoil Preseason: Shawn Argente repays JRU’s trust with stellar showing
MANILA, Philippines—Despite being the new kid on the block, Jose Rizal University’s Shawn Argente already feels right at home.
Argente repaid his new squad’s trust in him with an explosive 12-point outing that helped the Heavy Bombers torment their memorable rival College of St. Benilde, 81-68, in the Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup at San Juan Arena on Sunday.
“I’m just new here but they already treat me like family. I’m thankful for my teammates because they’re the ones who really boost my confidence, along with my coaches,” Argente said in Filipino.
“They’re the ones who help me play well.”
All of Argente’s buckets came from beyond the arc, sinking four triples with only two misses for an efficient 66.7 percent shooting clip.
He also came away with two rebounds, a steal and an assist, all in just 17 minutes of play, which got the praise of assistant coach Alex Callueng.
“We are all confident with his skills. We’re all confident with how he’s playing. He’s new, he’s young, along the way he will learn a lot,” said Callueng.
“He will have lots of mistakes and from those mistakes, I hope he learns with our guidance,” he added.
Before heading to JRU, Argente was a consistent trainee under the Letran Squires program.
Currently, Argente is posting averages of 13.2 markers per outing in the preseason.
