GAB looks into incident as Marikina coach hits own player at MPBL game

MANILA, Philippines—The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) has launched an investigation following an incident during a game at the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) between Marikina and Pasig last Tuesday.

In a viral video, a furious Marikina coach Elvis Tolentino was seen hitting his player Felipe Chavez on the chest during a timeout after the guard committed a costly turnover with 14.7 seconds left while their team was down by four. Pasig went on to beat Marikina, 71-66, at Ynares Sports Arena.

GAB vowed “swift action” on the matter.

“The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) has taken notice and has initiated an investigation into the matter. We are committed to ensuring a fair and just resolution, and we assure you that GAB will take swift action based on the findings of the investigation. Our priority is to uphold the integrity of the MPBL and ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved,” said GAB in a statement on Friday.

Tolentino also serves as a councilor in Marikina City.

“GAB remains dedicated to promoting the highest standards of sportsmanship and professionalism in all sporting events under our jurisdiction. Any actions that compromise the integrity of the game will not be tolerated.”
