John Chicano, Erika Burgos share 5150 glory in Bohol after impressive closing runs

BOHOL—John Leerams Chicano and Erika Nicole Burgos broke away from their respective fields in the run on Sunday to rule the Sun Life 5150 Triathlon at Bellevue Resort beachfront on Panglao Island here.

A multiple gold medal winner in the Southeast Asian Games, Chicano was unmatched in the final leg of the 1.5 km swim, 40 km bike and 10 km run race where he clocked 35 minutes and 41 seconds for a total winning time of two hours and four seconds, over four minutes faster than last year’s champion, Satar Salem.

Burgos, meanwhile, timed 2:24:28 after reclaiming the lead in the run stage with a clocking of 43:18, winning by almost six minutes over Leyann Ramo. Katrina Salazar clocked 02:32:09 for third place.

Burgos set the pace after the swim, coming out of the water in 21:20, before the eventual second placer gobbled up the women’s field in the bike.

Chicano (30-34) and Burgos (20-24) also topped their respective age group divisions with Salem and Ramos ruling the male 25-29 and 20-24 classes, respectively. Ramo also claimed the women’s 30-34 trophy while Salazar reigned in the 15-19 category.

Also winning were Matthew Hermosa and Nicole del Rosario, who snared the Go for Gold Sunrise Sprint titles. The sprint races were disputed over the 750m open-water swim, 20-km bike ride and a 5-km run distances.

Hermosa timed 01:01:56, while Del Rosario was the runaway winner in the women’s event with a time of 01:13:12, with Nicole Rojo and Jamie Lynn Lacaya finishing second and third in 01:17:03 and 01:28:28, respectively.Musong R. Castillo
