MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine women’s softball team ended its World Cup campaign with a 5-6 loss to host Italy in the 17th Women’s Softball World Cup on Wednesday.
The PH Blu girls couldn’t qualify for the next round, losing in seven innings in their playoff for third place in Group C.
The Filipinos stunned the Italians with a 6-5 victory in a tight contest suspended by inclement weather to enter the World Cup playoffs.
The Philippines finished its campaign with two wins in five games — fourth in Pool C — including a 5-3 conquest over New Zealand.
It was the Philippines’ eighth appearance in the Women’s Softball World Cup and last won a medal in 1970 with a bronze finish.
Italy was supposed to take on Canada in a repechage but it was canceled due to the bad weather but it did not affect final positions in the tournament as both teams had already booked spots in the World Cup Finals 2024.
