MANILA, Philippines—Filipino basketball fans are revved up for the upcoming Fiba World Cup not only to rally behind Gilas Pilipinas but also to see Team USA play.
It’s safe to say that the feeling is mutual with USA Basketball head coach Steve Kerr also expressing his excitement ahead of the Americans’ arrival here.
“I’m so excited to go to Manila. I’ve never been to the Philippines, so this’ll be fun. I know how popular basketball is from talking with friends,” said Kerr in an interview with Fiba.
“They’ve told us how basketball-crazy the fans are there, so it’s going to be a lot of fun and we’re really excited.”
The United States will be led by All-Stars Anthony Edwards, Brandon Ingram, Tyrese Haliburton and Jaren Jackson Jr. as well as rising stars Jalen Brunson, Paolo Banchero Mikal Bridges and Austin Reaves. Completing the all-NBA cast are Bobby Portis Jr., Walker Kessler, Josh Hart and Cam Johnson.
The US, which is in Group C along with Greece, New Zealand and Jordan, will play its group phase games at Mall of Asia Arena.
“They have the advantage of continuity but for us, we have a lot of depth. We’re bringing new players in every tournament,” said Kerr.
“Our focus is on ourselves. We always feel that as the United States team, there’s always area for growth,” he added.
The US begins its campaign on August 26 against New Zealand.
