Davis Cuppers off to S. Korea for crucial tie
MANILA, Philippines—Bursting with confidence, the Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippine Davis Cup team left for Changwon, South Korea, Sunday in a bid to stay in Group 1 of the Asia/Oceania zone. Playing team captain Cecil Mamiit said they will rely on their vast Davis Cup experience against the young South Korean team, whose players’ ages range from 17 to 22 years old. The tie is scheduled Sept. 17 to 19 on the hardcourts of Chanwon municipal courts. Korea’s non-playing captain Kim Nam-hoon is fielding a team made up of Lim Yong-kyu (19), Jeong Suk-young (17), Kim Hyun-joon (22) and Seol Jae-min (20). Lim is the highest ranked Korean at 319th in the world in singles and 607th in doubles. “This tie is more important for us compared to all the three ties last year, because we will be trying not to slide back to Group 2,” said manager Jean Henri Lhuillier.
