Romualdez says it’s a ‘moment of pride’ for PH to co-host Fiba World Cup
MANILA, Philippines — It is a moment of pride for the Philippines to co-host the Fiba World Cup as the country’s basketball-loving people have been waiting for this, House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez said on Friday.
In a statement, Romualdez said he wishes the country success in co-hosting the Fiba World Cup 2023, adding that he believes the country’s love for the game and the rich basketball culture would be evident.
“It is a moment of pride that Manila will be at the epicenter of this grand tournament, hosting the medal rounds and offering a stage for basketball giants from all over the globe,” Romualdez said.

We are not just hosting a sporting event; we are inviting all to experience a piece of our culture, our joy, our unity, and our pride,” he added.
The Fiba World Cup kicks off on Friday, with games being held in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Japan. Gilas Pilipinas, the Philippines’ national team, will start its campaign against the Dominican Republic, which is led by Minnesota Timberwolves star big man Karl-Anthony Towns.

“To the teams gracing our courts, thank you for being an integral part of this historic event. Whether you are competing in your initial rounds in Manila, Jakarta, or Okinawa, rest assured that the energy, spirit, and passion for the game resonate just as strongly across all venues,” Romualdez said.
“As we draw closer to the climax of this tournament, we anticipate a crescendo of emotions, remarkable talent on display, and an exhibition of basketball artistry, all culminating on September 10th in Manila,” he added.
The House leader also hopes that the sporting event would help foster friendship between countries.
“Let us come together to celebrate the spirit of camaraderie, competition, and basketball. Here’s to creating unforgettable memories, witnessing extraordinary plays, and forging new friendships,” he added.
