MANILA, Philippines—Dwight Ramos emerged as Gilas Pilipinas’ second-best scorer behind Jordan Clarkson in the group phase of the Fiba World Cup.

While Clarkson leading Gilas in that department was expected, Ramos becoming the team’s next-best scoring option also didn’t surprise coach Chot Reyes.

And it’s not only on the offensive end where Ramos has been valuable for Gilas.

“[He’s] a great complement to Jordan (Clarkson) and it’s not only his scoring but everything he does, the way he defends and rebounds, everything, makes him a complete package,” said Reyes on Tuesday after Gilas bowed out with a loss to Italy, 90-83, at Araneta Coliseum.

“When he came here to start our training camp, I remember he told me he was in the best shape of his career because of all the offseason work he did while he was away and it’s showing in his games.”

The 24-year-old Ramos is averaging 11.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.0 assists through three games. He also leads Gilas with 1.7 steals a game as a testament to his all-around effort in this World Cup.

Ramos had his best scoring night against Italy, posting 14 points on top of two rebounds, three assists and two steals.

“That’s a product of all his hard work. Even in the offseason or even when he was in California, he continues working,” said Reyes.
