MANILA, Philippines — Kieffer Alas was named into the Fiba U16 Asian Championship All-Star Five to cap the Gilas Pilipinas Boys’ campaign in Doha, Qatar.
Alas, who emerged as the main man of the national youth team, joined New Zealand’s Oscar Goodman and Lachlan Crate, Australia’s Henry Sewell and China’s Boyuan Zhang of China in the mythical team. Goodman was named MVP.
The 16-year-old Alas averaged 15.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 2.6 points in seven games in the tournament.
Alas, the youngest son of multi-titled coach Louie and brother of PBA star Kevin, unleashed his best game of 29 points in the quarterfinal where Gilas eliminated Japan, 64-59, and booked a ticket to next year’s Fiba U17 World Cup.
Gilas Boys lost to Australia in the semis and settled for fourth place after falling to China in the battle for bronze, 87-59.
The 6-foot-2 guard had 13 points and five rebounds in their final game in Doha, Qatar.
Australia won the gold for the third straight year after overcoming New Zealand, 79-76 in the final to complete a perfect 6-0 campaign.
