Asian Games: Mark Fajardo eliminated by Chinese bet in boxing
HANGZHOU, China—Mark Ashley Fajardo got clobbered by Chinese Wang Xiangyang in another early exit for Filipino boxers in the 19th Asian Games.
Egged on by a hometown crowd, Wang showed he’s the better fighter in the ring, 5-0, to advance to the men’s 63.5kg round of 16 at the Hangzhou Gymnasium here.
Fajardo’s lopsided defeat was far from the first-round knockout the Cebuano inflicted against Wangdi Dorji of Bhutan in his opening bout.
Fajardo will now accompany Tokyo Irish Magno, Aira Villegas and Aaron Jude Bado on the sidelines after dropping their fights earlier.
Riza Pasuit and Marjon Pianer will begin their bids in the Asiad on Thursday.
Pasuit has been booked opposite Thailand’s Somnuek Thanaya in the women’s 60kg and Pianar, who drew an early bye, meets Uzbekistan’s Muydinkhujaev Asadkhuja in the men’s -71kg.
Meanwhile, Olympic silver medal winner Nesthy Petecio climbs the ring for the first time on Friday against top seed Lin Yu Ting of Chinese Taipei.
