More Filipino athletes try to push their campaigns in the Hangzhou Asian Games after the Philippines bagged its first gold medal in China courtesy of EJ Obiena on Saturday.

Obiena’s record-setting win in pole vault put the Philippines–which sent 396 athletes from 40 sports to this year’s Games–at 18th place in the medal tally as of September 30 at 10 p.m.

More Filipino athletics bets see action on October 30 along with athletes from archery, sepak takraw, baseball, golf, chess, squash, kurash, boxing and basketball.

Janry Ubas sought for the lucky jump that he badly needed throughout and yet it never came.

Gilas Pilipinas suffered its first loss in the 19th Asian Games women’s basketball tournament, running into a well-oiled Japan side, 96-59, on Sunday night.

Saddled by an error-filled first quarter, Gilas hardly stood a chance against pretty much the same Akatsuki Five that finished 2nd in the Women’s Asia Cup in Sydney, Australia, earlier this year.

The Philippines was handed a 6-0 defeat by Japan on Sunday as the men’s baseball competitions of the Hangzhou Asian Games got underway at Shaoxing Baseball and Softball Center.

Starter Paolo Macasaet was pulled after retiring just two batters after Japan scored three in the top half of the first inning while the Philippine offense could only produce three hits in their one-sided Group A encounter.

John Ceniza narrowly misses podium in Asian Games weightlifting

John Febuar Ceniza came just a tad short of a pocketing medal in the men’s weightlifting on Sunday in the 19th Asian Games.

Ceniza lifted a total of 297 kilograms in the men’s 61kg category and wound up fourth at the Xiaoshan Sports Centre Gymnasium, narrowly finishing behind bronze medalist Chungguk Kim of North Korea.

South Korea’s badminton squad raced onto the court and some players were in tears after steamrolling hosts China 3-0 to win Asian Games women’s team gold Sunday for the first time in nearly 30 years.

World number one An Se-young got the party started in Hangzhou in rampant fashion when she defeated Chen Yufei 21-12, 21-13 in double-quick time.

An athletics official suffered a broken leg at the Asian Games in Hangzhou after being hit by a hammer hurled during competition by Kuwait’s Ali Zankawi.

The man was sitting on a chair outside the throwing circle when Zankawi aborted his attempt on Saturday evening, with his hammer hitting the protective netting.

HANGZHOU, China—Patrick Coo recovered from an early crash before getting back on track to claim the bronze medal in BMX cycling in the 19th Asian Games.

The 21-year-old former Asian junior champion handed the Philippines its seventh bronze medal on Sunday that went along with pole vaulter EJ Obiena’s gold medal and sanda fighter Arnel Mandal’s silver.

HANGZHOU, China—Kristina Knott bounced back from a frustrating sprint in the women’s 100m the other day to clinch a spot in the finals of her pet event on Sunday in the 19th Asian Games.

Knott, the country’s 200m record holder, didn’t disappoint this time, clocking 24.02 seconds in the qualifying heats at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium.

The national boxing team took a huge blow to the chin when Nesthy Petecio, a silver medalist in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, was eliminated by a taller foe from the medal race on Saturday.

Another Olympic silver medalist, also faced with a rangier opponent, made sure his own bid would go on.

Carlo Paalam cut down Kyrgyzstan’s Uulu Munarbek Seiitbek to size in the 57-kilogram (kg) division of men’s boxing, hammering out a 4-1 victory to advance to the quarterfinals in the Asian Games here in Hangzhou, China.

HANGZHOU, China—Walking out of the Hangzhou Gymnasium corridor following a failed Olympic qualifying bid, Nesthy Petecio’s resolve only got reinforced despite facing a tougher road ahead.

“I’m not yet done. The fight continues and I’ll come out of this even more motivated,’’ said Petecio in Filipino after she got shown the door in women’s boxing at the 19th Asian Games.
