MANILA, Philippines — Overcome with emotion in his comeback from an ACL injury, CJ Cansino vows to be a better player next game in the University of the Philippines’ title-redemption bid in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament.
The graduating winger admitted he celebrated too much in the baskets he scored and apologized for his actions after sitting out for one year.
“After the game, I was a bit ashamed because I know that I’m not that kind of player. I was just happy because it’s my first game that’s why I couldn’t control my emotions,” said Cansino in Filipino.
“I was like a kid who was allowed to go out of the house without napping. I’m sorry to the fans and coaches for what I did. I’m not that kind of person. I’ll be better next game.”
Cansino drained five triples to finish with 19 points and also put on the finishing touches to seal UP’s 68-51 win over Adamson sans Jerom Lastimosa on Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.
“I think I made those shots because of the trust of my teammates. They encouraged me to keep shooting when I missed my shots. They gave me the confidence to do my role,” he said.
The UP captain is returning from a second ACL injury. He suffered the injury and played through pain in their Season 84 title run last May.
“When I was recovering, I started shooting. I didn’t let up until I was able to do defensive drills. I also focused on defense because we’re a defensive team,” said Cansino. “Thank God because I was able to come back. I’m happy with my return because I was able to help my team. I only have one prayer, I hope to stay healthy the whole season.”
Cansino also relished his leadership role guiding newcomers Francis Lopez, Janjan Felicilda, Sean Alter, Reyland Torres, and Luis Pablo.
“They had rookie jitters so I told them that it’s ok to feel nervous. We saw their improvement during the offseason. We’re happy that they are willing to be guided by us, [seniors],” he said.
UP eyes its second win against opening day winner University of the East on Wednesday at MOA Arena.
“Every game, for sure, we’re going to really prepare for them. For me, this season, all the schools are contenders. We’ll really prepare for UE,” Cansino said.
