MANILA, Philippines—Carlos Yulo redeemed himself from a disastrous showing in vault by qualifying for the Paris Olympics.

Yulo secured a ticket to Paris after becoming the highest-ranked eligible participant in the floor exercise at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium on Sunday (Manila time).

The 23-year-old Yulo became the second Filipino to claim an Olympic berth after EJ Obiena.

The Philippine Olympic Committee confirmed Yulo’s Olympic qualification on Sunday.

“He proudly joins the elite ranks of Filipino athletes securing a Paris berth alongside the number two pole vaulter in the world, EJ Obiena,” said the POC in a statement.

But making next year’s Summer Games did not come without a hitch after Yulo had a forgettable performance in vault where he fell twice and failed to register a point that cost him a spot in the men’s individual all-around final.

Yulo, however, made sure to bounce back with 14.600 points for third in floor behind Artem Dolgopyat of Israel and Frederick Richard of the United States, both of whom have already qualified for the Games.

The Tokyo Olympian tries to add another world title to his collection on Saturday in the floor final. He won the same event in 2019 before ruling vault in 2021.
