Gilas Pilipinas came back from 20 points down to stun host China, 77-76, on Wednesday night to advance to the final of the 19th Asian Games men’s basketball tournament.

The Nationals got to work in the final period behind the heroics of the beloved naturalized forward Justin Brownlee, who hit the go-ahead step-back triple with 24 ticks left at Hangzhou Olympic Centre Gymnasium.

HANGZHOU, China—Another Philippine record got scrubbed off the books.

The country’s men’s 4x400m relay squad of Umajesty Williams, Frederick Ramirez, Joyme Sequita and Miguel Carlo Del Prado reset the national mark in the event anew despite placing fifth on Wednesday night in 19th Asian Games.

They clocked three minutes and 4.89 seconds, eclipsing the previous record they generated the day before (3:06.15). India ruled the race in 3:01.58 while Qatar checked in second in 3:02.05 and Sri Lanka copped the bronze in 3:02.55.

North Korea’s Pang Chol Mi exacted revenge on China’s Chang Yuan in the Asian Games boxing to win the women’s bantamweight (54kg) gold and silence the home fans on Wednesday.

The pair met in the flyweight (51kg) final at the Jakarta Asian Games in 2018 with Chang winning a tight decision.

In a scrappy rematch in Hangzhou it was Pang who did the better work to get a deserved result, even though the judges were split 3-2.

HANGZHOU, China — Strife-torn Myanmar won its first medal at the Asian Games in China on Wednesday, beating Indonesia to take home gold in men’s sepaktakraw, a popular regional sport also known as kick volleyball.

The Southeast Asian nation took two straight sets from Indonesia in the sport with similarities to volleyball, but played only with the feet, knees, head and chest.

Myanmar has been overwhelmed by violence since the military seized power in February 2021 from the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.

HANGZHOU, China—On to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Eumir Marcial drowned in euphoria after knocking out Syria’s Ahmad Ghousoon cold on Wednesday at the 19th Asian Games to carve his own path back to the Olympics.

The pride of Zamboanga City unloaded a rock-like right hook halfway through the second round, hitting its target squarely on the jaw and flooring the Syrian for good in a semifinal victory that assured Marcial a trip to the finals of the men’s 80kg division.

Eumir Marcial is headed to Paris Olympics after entering the final of the Asian Games’ men’s 80kg boxing.

Marcial, the last remaining boxer in contention for the Philippines, scored a 2nd round knockout vs Syria’s Ahmad Ghousoon in the semifinal that booked his ticket to the final.

Only the boxing finalists in the Asian Games are given outright spots in the Olympics next year.

Japan sets up North Korea showdown in Asian Games women’s football

Reigning champion Japan held off a spirited fightback from host China on Tuesday to set up an Asian Games women’s football final against North Korea.

Japan silenced the partisan crowd in Hangzhou to lead 4-1 at the break and put one foot in the final, as the China players trudged off the pitch into the dressing rooms.

HANGZHOU, China–Saudi Arabian distance runner Yousef Mohammed Alasiri tested positive for a banned substance at the Asian Games and has been provisionally suspended, the International Testing Agency (ITA) said.

Alasiri was entered in the men’s 5,000 and 10,000 meters events in Hangzhou but did not start in either race.

The 34-year-old had returned an “adverse analytical finding for the non-specified prohibited substance darbepoetin”, the ITA said.
