Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone asked for one more great effort from his players in the 19th Asian Games. On Friday night, he got a performance that will be talked about for ages.

The Philippines rolled past Jordan, 70-60, to rule the men’s basketball showcase at Hangzhou Olympic Centre Gymnasium in China and deliver the country’s first Asian Games gold in over half a century.

HANGZHOU, China—Jamie Christine Lim couldn’t sustain an earlier victory and yielded to a two-time Asian champion from Kazakhstan in the karate competitions of the 19th Asian Games.

The 22-year-old Assel Kanay scored a yuko on Lim for a 1-0 triumph in the women’s kumite -61kg division, ushering the Filipino out of the quarterfinals on Friday at the Linping Sports Centre Gymnasium here.

PH sepak takraw team plucks second bronze in Asian Games

HANGZHOU, China—Make it two bronze medals for the Philippine men’s sepak takraw squad.

Headlined by veterans Jason Huerte and Rheyjey Ortouste, the team failed to hurdle Malaysia after dropping an intense back-and-forth match, 2-0, to settle for another third-place performance in the 19th Asian Games.

The Philippines rolled past Thailand, 11-1, in eight innings on Friday to secure a fifth place finish in the men’s baseball competitions of the Hangzhou Asian Games at Shaoxing Baseball and Softball Sports Culture Center.

The Filipino batters scored three runs in the bottom half of the first to set things up for a one-sided placement round affair that eventually ended abruptly due to a 10-run mercy rule and produced the best placing by teams that failed to make the super round.

EJ Obiena receives P10M in financial boost after Asian Games gold

MANILA, Philippines — EJ Obiena received 10 million pesos from his high school alma mater, Chiang Kai Shek College, to support his campaign in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Fresh from a gold medal finish in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, the World No.2 pole vaulter was welcomed by his high school on Friday and received a check of three million pesos from the school, five million from the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. and one million each from businessmen Anson Tan and Carlos Chan.

HANGZHOU, China—Stepping out of the mat in abrasive defeat during the 2018 Asian Games cut a deep wound that left Annie Ramirez sleepless for many nights.

Ramirez removed that ugly scar for good on Thursday by fending off Kazakhstan’s Galina Duvanova in their 57kg gold-medal collision in women’s jiujitsu at the 19th Asian Games.

“I felt really bad after losing in the previous Asian Games that I just couldn’t wait to recover from that defeat. Winning the gold here is sweet redemption for me,’’ said Ramirez in Filipino.

Kaila Napolis salvages jiu-jitsu bronze in Asian Games

HANGZHOU, China—Kaila Napolis salvaged a bronze medal on Thursday after dealing Hessa Alshamsi a piercing 4-2 defeat in women’s ju-jitsu at the 19th Asian Games.

Napolis, a two-time world championships bronze medalist, added the third-place performance to her collection after pulling off a great escape act in their -52kg encounter.

HANGZHOU, China—Southeast Asian Games gold medalists Ronil Tubog and Alvin Lobreguito absorbed stinging losses on Friday, bowing out early in their opening bouts at the 19th Asian Games wrestling competition here.

First to fall on the mat inside the Lin’an Sports Culture and Exhibition Centre was the 30-year-old Tubog, who got vanquished by India’s Bajrang, 10-0, by technical superiority in the men’s freestyle 65kg division.

Bahrain wins 10th Asian Games gold with first place in marathon

HANGZHOU, China — The small island kingdom of Bahrain won its 10th gold medal Thursday at the Asian Games as runner Eunice Chebichii Paul Chumba took first place in the women’s marathon.

Chumba was only a few seconds in front of silver medalist Zhang Deshun at 35 kilometers, but broke away to finish 1 minute, 41 seconds ahead of her in a winning time of 2:26:14.

Sardana Trofimova of Kazakhstan finished third for the bronze.

Asian Games records first doping case involving medalist

Turkmenistan’s Tejen Tejenov on Thursday became the first medalist at the Hangzhou Asian Games to fail a doping test, officials said, with a Saudi runner later becoming the sixth athlete in total.

The 30-year-old Tejenov, who came second in the heavyweight 90kg category of kurash, an ancient form of wrestling, tested positive for anabolic steroids, the International Testing Agency said.

He has been provisionally suspended and is in danger of being stripped of his silver medal.

North Korea call themselves ‘world leaders’ after Asian Games weightlifting golds

North Korea proclaimed themselves “world leaders” after winning a sixth Asian Games weightlifting gold on Thursday to cap their return to international competition after a four-year absence.

Song Kuk Hyang, last seen at the 2018 Youth Olympics, won the women’s 76kg category in Hangzhou to take North Korea’s total in the sport to six golds, five silvers and two bronze.

They currently top the medals table in weightlifting.

China women’s basketball coach Zheng Wei said familiarity was the key after the host retained its Asian Games title with a thrilling 74-72 win over old rival Japan on Thursday.

The Chinese took a big early lead and looked to be cruising towards gold in Hangzhou only for Japan to chip away at their advantage and draw level late on.

The packed crowd turned tense as Olympic silver medalists Japan began to turn the screw, but China held their nerve and Wang Siyu sank the winning shot with seconds remaining.

Gilas Pilipinas tries to give this basketball-crazed country its first Asian Games gold medal in 61 years in its rematch with Jordan on Friday night. And national coach Tim Cone believes that do-it-all ace Justin Brownlee will again be up to the task.

The conditions, after all, call for it.

“I really only have one message for him and that is to be aggressive,” Cone told the Inquirer when asked of Brownlee on the eve of the match at Hangzhou Olympic Centre in China. “If anything, it’s the fans that motivate him and keep him confident. They treat him special so he feels he has to play special.”

HANGZHOU, China–Hands down the most decorated Filipino in her sport, no amount of harm can force Meggie Ochoa to quit.

But after striking gold in the 19th Asian Games here, the seasoned grappler takes a step back from the mat to ponder on her athletic future.

“For now, I would rather pay more attention to my recovery before I think of any competitions within the year,’’ said Ochoa, who subdued current world champion Balqees Abdulla of the United Arab Emirates in the -48kg final of women’s jiu jitsu on Thursday that gifted the Philippines its second gold medal.

HANGZHOU, CHINA—One gold medal, two new Philippine records and eight finals appearances for medal shots.

Taking 15 athletes to the 19th Asian Games (Asiad) here, PH athletics certainly did more than represent the country well, with EJ Obiena giving the Filipinos their first gold with a meet record-smashing performance in the pole vault.

And the overall record is giving the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association leadership a lot of hope that more bets will qualify for Paris next year, as the numbers at the conclusion of the athletics tournament here at the colossal 80,000-seat Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium suggest just that.

Philcycling backs Ariana Evangelista after failed doping test at Asian Games

Philcycling (Integrated Cycling Federation of the Philippines) on Thursday expressed its full backing of Ariana Evangelista after the female mountain biker failed a doping test during the Hangzhou Asian Games.

The country’s cycling federation said in a statement that it was “unfortunate” that Evangelista was handed a provisional suspension after she tested positive for erythropoietin (EPO), a banned performance-enhancing substance.
