MANILA, Philippines—Ateneo capped off Saturday’s UAAP Season 86 women’s basketball tournament quadruple-header with a bang after halting University of the Philippines’ six-game win streak, 85-76, at Adamson University Gym.

It was the Blue Eagles’ mentality that powered their stunning win against the Fighting Maroons that denied them a first-round sweep.

“We all knew that UP was undefeated but we had the mentality that we really believed that we could beat any team. We’re starting to mature so hopefully, this is a sign of better things to come,” said coach LA Mumar, whose squad improved to a 5-2 record.

MANILA, Philippines—La Salle’s Kevin Quiambao balled out with much emotion in their win against University of the East in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament.

After the Green Archers’ 83-75 win over the Red Warriors at Quadricentennial Pavilion in UST on Saturday, coach Topex Robinson revealed that Quiambao played with a bit more baggage than he was used to with the death anniversary of his grandfather.

MANILA, Philippines—La Salle’s Raven Cortez’s birthday is still two days away but he was the one who gave the Green Archers a present with an 83-75 win over University of the East in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament at Quadricentennial Pavilion, UST, on Saturday.

Cortez, who barely got minutes for La Salle in its last two games, top scored for the Green Archers, who  turned the game around in the second half and pulled away in the fourth, with 18 points and five rebounds on a blistering 62.5 shooting from the field.

“Of course, coming into this game, I just stayed ready. The coaches make the decision on who’s playing and I’m just on the bench, supporting my teammates. It just so happened that my name was called and I had a great game,” said Cortez.

MANILA, Philippines—Come hell or high water, expect National University to keep sticking to its system come the second round of the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament.

After all, the Bulldogs’ style of play has done wonders for them with a 6-1 record at the end of the opening round despite their high number of turnovers.

MANILA, Philippines—National University brushed off a slow start to squeak past Adamson, 69-66, to end its first round campaign in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball at UST Quadricentennial Pavilion on Saturday.

The Bulldogs ended their first round on a high note with a 6-1 record, but they first had to overcome a sluggish start where they went down as big as 11 in the first half.

For a team coming off a big win against one of the top guns in Season 86 of the UAAP men’s basketball tournament, undefeated University of the Philippines (UP) certainly has earned the chance to take it easy even for a bit.

But the Maroons won’t—and that’s not because they can’t.

“There is no stopping for us. There’s always something we could improve on,” coach Goldwin Monteverde said, moments after a high-wire 67-64 nipping of La Salle on Wednesday that moved the Fighting Maroons within another win of a first round sweep. “As a team, we would really take both the good and bad games as a learning experience.
