MANILA, Philippines — University of the Philippines guard CJ Cansino brought out his A game and on-court antics in the finals rematch against Ateneo on Sunday in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament.

However, Cansino’s 22-point effort wasn’t enough to complete a first-round sweep for UP as it fell to the defending champions in overtime, 99-89, on Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.

MANILA, Philippines — Joseph Obasa repaid Ateneo’s trust by delivering a stellar performance against University of the Philippines in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday.

Obasa made the big shots and crucial stops to help the Blue Eagles hand the Fighting Maroons their first defeat, 99-89.

MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo rookie Mason Amos is eager to keep improving heading into the second round of the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament.

Slowly getting into his rhythm, Amos was the hero for the Blue Eagles in a 99-89 overtime win over University of the Philippines on Sunday.

MANILA, Philippines — Mason Amos came to the rescue in overtime as Ateneo dealt University of the Philippines’ first defeat, 99-89, for its first win streak of the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.

The Filipino-Aussie big man rose to the occasion before 12,122 fans, scoring seven of his 19 points in overtime to go with 10 rebounds and two assists.

MANILA, Philippines — After finally ending the University of Santo Tomas’ longest losing streak in history, Nic Cabañero and the Growling Tigers are determined to get more wins in the second round of the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament.

Cabañero, who couldn’t hide his frustration when UST suffered its 19th straight loss after getting blown out by Ateneo last Wednesday, stayed true to his promise to keep working until he finally delivered a win for his school.

MANILA, Philippines — University of Santo Tomas finally ended its 19-game losing streak with a 68-62 victory over Far Eastern University in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Nic Cabañero, who was part of the school’s longest losing spell dating back to their 1-13 finish last year, led the Growling Tigers with 23 points, six rebounds, and two assists to offset his five turnovers.

Ateneo would rather be in a better place in the standings heading into a showdown against title rival University of the Philippines.

But despite just making it to 3-3 (win-loss), the Blue Eagles are ready for the streaking Fighting Maroons.

“We’ll show up,” said Ateneo coach Tab Baldwin. “Don’t lose any sleep over that; we’ll be there.”
