John Alcala is addressing the weakness in his game just to be sure that he has more than a fair chance of defending his Ironman 70.3 Puerto Princesa crown next month.
“Part of my everyday workout is doing a little extra on the swim part,” Alcala, who ruled this tournament last year using his excellent running skills, said. “Because that’s the weakest part of my game.“I am training hard for this [because] all eyes will be on me being the defending champion,” the Dipolog native said. “I will give it my all in defending my title.”
Big foreign field
The 1.9-kilometer swim, 90-km bike and 21-km run event will be loaded with a lot of international competitors, that’s why Alcala is making sure that he will come into his repeat bid as prepared as he can be.
“There will be a lot of strong athletes going there,” the 29-year-old Alcala, who also ruled the 70.3 Subic Bay last June, said. “And the race is long, and the elements can definitely affect anyone’s performance.”
