MANILA, Philippines—Arellano pulled off a stunner by defeating second-seed San Beda, 74-72, in the NCAA Season 99 men’s basketball tournament at San Juan Arena on Friday.

The Chiefs ended the Red Lions’ four-game winning streak while also snapping the four-game losing streak of their own to improve to a 2-9 card.

Jade Talampas recorded 18 points and six rebounds while Ralph Yanes scored 11 in the victory. Danielle Mallari and Troy Valencia had 10 markers each to push San Beda to a 7-3 record.

James Payosing led the Red Lions with 20 points but to no avail. Reigning Collegiate Press Corps Player of the Week Jomel Puno posted yet another double-double with 14 markers and 11 boards.

Jose Rizal University, meanwhile, extended San Sebastian’s losing string to three after taking a 79-72 victory.

Ry Dela Rosa made his presence known with 19 points to lift the Heavy Bombers to a 7-4 record.

Romel Calahat scored a game-high 20 to go along with six rebounds in a wasted effort as the Golden Stages collapsed to 3-8. Reggz Gabat’s 12-point outing also wasn’t enough to give San Sebastian the dub.
