MANILA, Philippines — Kevin Quiambao tallied the first triple-double in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament in five years as he powered La Salle past National University, 88-78, for its third straight win in Season 86 on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Quiambao delivered 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 14 assists to go with four steals to become the first player to record a triple-double since CJ Cansino’s rookie year with University of Santo Tomas exactly five years ago.

“Everything came from the system of our coaching staff. I doubled my effort because we lost to them in the first round. I don’t want that to happen again,” said Quiambao in Filipino.

La Salle coach Topex Robinson put everything in his Green Archers’ perspective as far as their blockbuster matchup with National U goes on Saturday.

“Whether you like it or not, they (Bulldogs) will play in the Finals or the Final Four [at the very least], Robinson said in acknowledging how formidable the National U program is, before saying how much he would love to play them as the elimination round of UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament continues.

“The opportunity for us to learn [playing] against NU is gonna be helpful for us,” he said, never mind the fact that the Bulldogs dealt them a sorry 80-77 overtime defeat just two weeks before, and that vengeance is not their battle cry for the 4 p.m. contest set at Mall of Asia Arena.

MANILA, Philippines — Adamson coach  Nash Racela refused to answer questions about Jerom Lastimosa, who suffered another knee injury in his return on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament.

After missing the whole first round, Lastimosa returned to action and scored three points. However, he got hurt after his knee collided with Gerry Abadiano’s midway through the third quarter in their blowout 77-51 loss to University of the Philippines.

Lastimosa got carried off the court by his teammate Jed Colonia and never returned to the game.

MANILA, Philippines — Denok Miranda became the first coach to sweep Ateneo tactician Tab Baldwin in the UAAP men’s basketball elimination round since the latter started coaching in the league in 2016.

L-Jay Gonzales sank a “miracle” one-hand trey as FEU completed a Season 86 elimination round sweep of Ateneo, 62-59, on Wednesday, giving  Miranda and the Tamaraws a rare feat as they became the first to win two games against the Baldwin-coached Blue Eagles in seven years.

Miranda, who used to be a player of Baldwin in TNT back in 2015, said that he learned a lot from the Kiwi-American coach from the PBA and a couple of tune-up games between FEU and Ateneo.
