Jia De Guzman makes Japan V.League debut; Jaja Santiago sparks JT Marvelous

In joining the Denso Airybees, Jia De Guzman is the third Filipino to play in the Japan V.League.

MANILA, Philippines — Jia De Guzman came off the bench in her Japan V.League debut as Denso Airybees fell to defending champion NEC Red Rockets, 19-25, 25-22, 18-25, 14-25, on Saturday at Kawasaki City Todoroki Arena.

The eight-time Premier Volleyball League Best Setter played as a backup playmaker to starter Yuka Yamaguchi.

De Guzman provided quality minutes and she also saw action in the second and fourth frames in their opening game loss.

Thai import Ajcharaporn Kongyot powered the NEC Red Rockets with 22 points on 17 attacks, three blocks, and two aces. 

Sarina Koga had 17 points, while middle blocker Nichika Yamada added 12 makers, including six blocks to win their season debut.

Minami Nakamoto carried the Airybees, amassing 23 points, while Nanami Asano added 13.

De Guzman and Denso seek to bounce back against Kurobe (0-1) on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Jaja Santiago dropped 14 points as JT Marvelous beat Toray Arrows, 25-16, 29-27, 26-28, 25-15, for its third straight win.

The 6-foot-5 Santiago dropped six attacks, five blocks, and three aces as her new team remained unbeaten in three games following their win over Toyota and Ageo Medics last week.

Annie Drew, once again, showed the way for JT Marvelous with 27 points including two blocks.

Santiago and Marvelous battle Okayama Seagulls on Sunday.
