NCAA: San Sebastian shocks San Beda, Benilde wins third straight

MANILA, Philippines—San Sebastian stunned San Beda, 79-74, in the NCAA Season 99 men’s basketball tournament at San Juan Arena on Sunday.

The Red Lions, who sat at the third seed before Sunday’s game, absorbed their second straight loss to take a 7-4 card and slide to the fourth spot behind Jose Rizal University.

Reggz Gabat led the upset with 18 points and two steals to snap his squad’s three-game losing streak. Romel Calahat and Rafael Are also helped San Sebastian improve to 4-8 with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

FEATURED STORIES

Jomel Puno finished a rebound shy of a double-double with 16 points and nine boards but to no avail. Jacob Cortez’s 15-marker outing was also put in vain.

The Heavy Bombers, meanwhile, overtook San Beda in the standings with a 79-74 victory over lowly Arellano.

Jonathan Medina led JRU in scoring with 16 points but it was Joshua Guiab’s double-double effort that sent the Heavy Bombers to an 8-4 card with 11 markers and 11 rebounds.

Jade Talampas continued to be a revelation for the Chiefs with 19 points but his squad still stumbled to a 2-9 record, just above cellar-dweller Letran (1-10).

College of St. Benilde capped off game day with a close 77-73 win over Perpetual Help for its third straight win.

The Blazers improved to 7-4 behind the guard tandem of Ray Carlos and Migs Oczon. Carlos and Oczon scored 19 and 18, respectively. Reigning MVP Will Gozum added 15 poins and 10 boards.

Art Roque scored a game-high 27 points built on six triples but the Altas still slipped to a 4-7 card. Jielo Razon chipped in 14 in the loss.
