Chieffy Caligdong takes lead role in big football project

MANILA, Philippines—Throughout his career, the Philippine Azkals co-skipper Chieffy Caligdong has overcome his lack in size with a steely resolve.

It’s the kind of no-nonsense mentality he hopes to bring in his new role as sports ambassador as he takes the lead role in grassroots projects that aims to find future standouts.

“It’s a dream come true—helping people through football,” said Caligdong at Tuesday’s luncheon tendered for him by Globe Telecoms at Legend Villas Hotel in Mandaluyong.

Caligdong will be involved in  development projects, particularly in football camps, that will help raise funds in an effort to construct 10,000 classrooms.

Aside from the grassroots projects, Caligdong will also conduct a mentoring program with United Football League team Green Archers United.

But GAU manager Monchu Garcia said Caligdong, who has asked to be discharged from the Air Force, isn’t moving to the Archers.

Caligdong said his new role will not prevent him from seeing action with the national team. In fact, he is already relishing the challenge in the upcoming AFF Suzuki Cup where the Azkals have been grouped with host Thailand and Vietnam.

“I’m confident of our chances,” he said in Filipino. “The other teams are also worried about us because we also have a stronger team.”
