MANILA, Philippines—Kevin Quiambao has a lot of reasons to smile before the Dubai International Basketball Tournament.

For one, he’s coming off a UAAP championship run. Then, he’s set to play for the Philippines alongside former NBA veterans Dwight Howard, Andray Blatche and Andre Roberson.

But what makes Quiambao giddier is seeing two La Salle coaches train him before the big event.

“As a La Sallian, I’m so happy to see my fellow La Sallians here and be with them in the court so they can teach me. Our (me, Charles Tiu and Topex Robinson bonding is normal now because both of them are like my father figures,” said Quiambao in Filipino on Wednesday.

“Whatever lessons I’m given by coach Charles and Topex, I’m just taking it all.”

Quiambao has plenty of opportunities to learn during this stint with the Philippine-based team.

For one, he would have to play the wing position–away from his usual four or five spot–with Strong Group already loaded in the center position.

“My role here is to be a wing. I’m developing my talents as a wingman and the first guy I talked to was coach Charles and he told me I needed to play as a wing… At first, it was hard because it’s not my natural position but that’s how you grow. Whatever situation my coaches give me, I’ll just take it as a learning curve.”

Quiambao also lauded the two star big men, saying they are very communicative in practice and he’s taking in all the lessons he can get from the NBA bigs.

“Both of them are super humble and approachable. They’ll even be the ones to approach you if there are things you want to clarify on and off the court. They’re always ready to communicate.”

The Dubai tilt will span from January 19-28.
