MANILA, Philippines—In a cutthroat fourth quarter between San Miguel and Magnolia in Game 1 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals, CJ Perez acted as the role model for the Beermen to hold on until the final buzzer.

The Beermen won 103-95, but not without a tough payoff period effort from the Hotshots but they managed to fend off any efforts to steal the games, thanks in large part to Perez, who came away with Player of the Game honors.

MANILA, Philippines–San Miguel got to work early on and kept it together the rest of the way for a 103-95 victory in Game 1 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals on Friday night.

The Beermen used a strong second period to build a 61-44 cushion going into the intermission before playing with steely nerves just when the Hotshots threatened down the stretch, ultimately tabbing the first victory in their best-of-seven duel.

The PBA has found a new broadcast channel with its live games now airing on the new free TV network RPTV Channel 9 starting with the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals.

RPTV, a free-to-air channel that replaced the disbanded CNN Philippines,  will carry the best-of-seven title series between Magnolia and San Miguel beginning Game 1 on Friday. The network change also has a bearing on the games’ start times.

Magnolia is fully aware of the online term being used to describe its reputation, which the team looks to shed against San Miguel Beer in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals.

“We just ignore [the name-calling] because we know how it is with social media,” Mark Barroca told The Inquirer when asked of the “Introvoys” tag that rival fans pinned on the Hotshots over their perceived penchant for starting with a bang and ending with a whimper.

It’s not about the player matchups or the coaches’ head-to-head showdown. It’s about both squad’s mentalities heading into the looming war of attrition.

MANILA, Philippines–Coach Chito Victolero sees plenty of sleepless nights ahead as Magnolia tries to put out all the stops not just on import Bennie Boatwright, but the rest of the talented San Miguel Beer roster in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals.

The Hotshots are in for a difficult task ahead of the title showdown which starts Friday at Mall of Asia Arena, with the Beermen set to ride on their hot streak powered by Boatwright, June Mar Fajardo and a collection of talent.

Live PBA games will now be aired on a regular basis through the new free-to-air network that replaced the disbanded CNN Philippines as content provider for channel 9.

Cignal head channel management and programming Rissa Guillas said RPTV is going to begin showing the games on Friday when the league opens the best-of-seven series for the Commissioner’s Cup title between San Miguel Beer and Magnolia.
